2007 Research Update: Organic Corn Cultivar Performance

By L. Abendroth and R. Elmore

18 Feb 2008 -

Research reports have been posted for three projects examining organic cultivar performance at Iowa State University research farms in 2007. The reports can be found at: http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/corn/production/management/hybrid/.

Research was conducted as part of a multi-state effort (along with the University of Wisconsin and The Ohio State University) and will continue across the three states in 2008. Dr. Kathleen Delate, ISU Extension Organic Specialist, is also part of this research team and is specifically investigating the performance of blended cultivars in organic systems as part of this regional effort. Find recommendations for organic cropping systems at her web site: http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/organicag/.

Research-based recommendations are needed by organic producers as the market for organic grain is strong. In Iowa, the acreage of organic corn cultivars planted is increasing each year. In 2005, 20,247 acres of organic corn were planted in the state, ranking Iowa second in the nation for organic corn production (USDA ERS, 2005). Organic seed is non-transgenic cultivars produced organically. Organic corn producers select cultivars based on a variety of factors, including strong early growth and vigor, competitiveness to weed pressure, insect and disease tolerance, high protein grain composition, and yield and grain moisture.
