Extension Offers Manure Management Events By Angela Rieck-Hinz, Department of Agronomy and Jean McGuire, Extension Communication Services, Iowa State University AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University Extension campus and field staff will be sponsoring several manure management events throughout August and September 2003. "These upcoming events are designed to provide helpful manure management information for producers," said Angela Rieck-Hinz, program specialist for Iowa State University Extension. Central Iowa Manure Applicator Calibration Field Day will be held Aug. 1, in Hubbard. The morning session, open to technical service providers, will discuss such topics as water quality and phosphorus, applicator calibration and regulatory updates on comprehensive nutrient management plans and concentrated animal feeding operations. It will be held at the Hubbard Golf and Recreation Center. The afternoon session, which is open to everyone and includes lunch, will cover land application of manure, residue management and calibration of manure application equipment. It will be held at the Keith Miller Farm, 2.5 miles north of Hubbard on Highway S 33. The Iowa Manure Digester Conference will be held Aug. 20, at the Sportsman Restaurant, located south on Oelwein on Highway 150. This conference will provide information on how to set up a value-added manure digester for generation of electricity on livestock farms. Manure Application and Simulated Manure Spill Response Field Day will be held Aug. 22, at the ISU Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Calumet. It is located 11 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. Highway 59 and a quarter mile east on County Road B-62. Manure application equipment will be demonstrated in the morning with discussions on rates, crop residue issues and conservation compliance and compaction. Afternoon activities include a simulated manure spill and clean-up response demonstrating materials available in a kit developed by Kris Kohl, ag engineering field specialist. Manure Application Demonstrations will be given during Iowa Farm and Field Fest held Aug. 26-28 at the Ziel Family Farm west of Ames, at the intersection of Highways 30 and 17. Northeast Iowa Manure Application Field Day will be held the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the intersection of Highways 63 and 188 at the Bremer County Corn and Soybean Growers Plot. Manure application equipment and equipment calibration will be demonstrated. Natural Resource Conservation Service staff will be present to answer questions about conservation plans and residue requirements. Iowa Department of Natural Resources staff will be present to answer regulatory questions about land application and separation distances. ISU soil fertility and soil management specialists will be available to answer questions about manure nutrient issues, tillage and compaction concerns from manure applications. The final event is the Manure Application Field Day. Various types of manure application equipment will be demonstrated to discuss manure application rates, crop residue issues and compaction. The event will be held on Sept. 18 at the Iowa Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Doon. The farm is located 11 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. Highway 59 and a quarter mile east on County Road B-62.
