Environmental Agriculture Stewardship Program Offered
Crop and livestock producers are invited to a meeting featuring
environmental stewardship and their role in protecting Iowa's resources.
The meeting will be offered 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at four locations.
Meetings will be March 17 in Spencer, March 24 in Sheldon, April 5 in
Whittemore and April 6 in Carroll.
"The meetings will address four main issues - water quality,
the phosphorus index, air quality and where to go for assistance," states
Beth Doran, Extension program committee chair. "These are current issues
facing our agricultural producers, and we are pleased to have speakers
who are leaders in these issues."
The keynote speaker is Chuck Corell, Water Quality Bureau
Chief with the Iowa Department of Natural Resource. He will discuss water
quality in Iowa.
"Because we are an agricultural state, the agriculture
industry in Iowa will play a major role in making improvements in Iowa's
water quality. Non-point source pollution is the major problem right
now, and agriculture is the major source of non-point pollution in Iowa, "said
Corell.
"The future of Iowa's water is good,
in my opinion. Iowans have a deep-seated love for our natural resources.
It will have to be the people of Iowa that make the difference."
The meetings are sponsored by Iowa State University Extension,
Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa Department
of Natural Resources and Natural Resources Conservation Service. The
$30 registration fee is due two days in advance of the meeting you plan
to attend. For a brochure or more information, contact your local ISU
Extension county office or Beth Doran, ISU Extension beef field specialist
(712) 472-2576.
