Meetings on EQIP Funding for Large Open Feedlots
in Western Iowa November 29
DES MOINES - Producers with open feedlots large
enough to need an NPDES permit can learn more about federal cost-share
funding at meetings in Sioux Center and Carroll on Nov. 29.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has set aside $6.5
million in Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) funding to
provide cost-share assistance for construction of runoff control facilities.
"This is the best, and possibly the last, chance for cost-share funding
for these large feedlots that need federal permits," said Lyle Asell,
the DNR's agricultural liaison. "I would encourage large producers to
attend these meetings and to sign up for cost-share by Dec. 17."
Asell added that producers who need these permits must also meet a March
22, 2006 , deadline on construction of runoff control facilities.
Producers can talk to representatives from the Iowa Cattlemen's Association
(ICA) , the NRCS and the DNR at these two meetings. Applications for
EQIP funding will also be available.
Larry Beeler from the NRCS will have a short presentation on EQIP which
was set aside at the state level to assist open feedlot producers who
must have a federal operating or NPDES permit.
Gene Tinker of the DNR will discuss and answer questions about NPDES,
or national pollutant discharge elimination system, permits.
A representative or board member from the ICA will also address issues
and answer producers' questions.
Meetings will be held at the following times:
- 1 p.m. in the basement of the Farmers Coop, 317 3rd
St NW, in Sioux Center and
- 7 p.m. at the Family Table, 1525 Radiant Road, in
Carroll.
Producers can sign up for EQIP cost-share at any time, but must sign
an application for 2005 funds on or before Dec. 17.
