RUSLE2 Database Update:
There has been a major update to the RUSLE2 database for Iowa. Specifically, the Crop Management Zone files for CMZ-04 and CMZ-16, and the county soils files have been updated. Thus, the cover management factor "C" and the soil erodibility factor "K" have been updated. The CMZ files now have updated rotations with energy requirement for fertilizer use and pre- and post-emergence pesticide applications. Soils files also contain updated soil loss tolerance “T” values. Instructions on how to incorporate these database changes into your RUSLE2 software are available at Iowa NRCS web page for RUSLE2 at www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/RUSLE2.html. MAKE sure to read these instructions prior to performing updates to your RUSLE2 database as it is recommended to start building a brand new database from scratch.
The second update pertains to non-irrigated row crop yields for individual Soil Map Units. Iowa has posted new yields by Soil Map Units. These new yields can be found on the eFOTG web page for Iowa at efotg.sc.egov.usda.gov/efotg_locator.aspx?map=IA by selecting eFOTG>county>Section II>Soils Information>Soil Survey Area>County Name>Soils Tables>Non irrigated yields for row crops.
Effective January 1, all NRCS offices will be using the new database for any new Conservation Planning or new RUSLE2 runs. Technical Service Providers are expected to start using the updated data by January 1, 2013. DNR will require use of this new database the next time you submit your 4-year manure management plan. Please stay tuned as additional changes will be featured in 2013.

Confinement site manure applicators can access a list of 2013 Confinement Site Manure Applicator workshop dates and location by clicking here. New for this year, we have included a calendar "app" for the list of workshop dates and locations. Find the meeting you plan to attend either by clicking on the colored county on the map or in the table. Then click on the calendar symbol in the column "add to my calendar". Click open to get a pop-up box for your computer calendar, then click save and close. This format should work across several different calendar platforms.
