RUSLE2 Database Update:
There has been a major update to the RUSLE2 database for Iowa.  Specifically, the Crop Management Zone files for CMZ-04 and CMZ-16, and the county soils files have been updated.  Thus, the cover management factor "C" and the soil erodibility factor "K" have been updated. The CMZ files now have updated rotations with energy requirement for fertilizer use and pre- and post-emergence pesticide applications. Soils files also contain updated soil loss tolerance “T” values.  Instructions on how to incorporate these database changes into your RUSLE2 software are available at Iowa NRCS web page for RUSLE2 at MAKE sure to read these instructions prior to performing updates to your RUSLE2 database as it is recommended to start building a brand new database from scratch.

The second update pertains to non-irrigated row crop yields for individual Soil Map Units.  Iowa has posted new yields by Soil Map Units. These new yields can be found on the eFOTG web page for Iowa at by selecting eFOTG>county>Section II>Soils Information>Soil Survey Area>County Name>Soils Tables>Non irrigated yields for row crops.

Effective January 1, all NRCS offices will be using the new database for any new Conservation Planning or new RUSLE2 runs. Technical Service Providers are expected to start using the updated data by January 1, 2013. DNR will require use of this new database the next time you submit your 4-year manure management plan. Please stay tuned as additional changes will be featured in 2013.

Commercial manure applicator training for business owners/manager and employees is scheduled for Friday, January 4, 2013 from 9 a.m. to noon in 69 Iowa county Extension offices and one location in Wisconsin. You can access the list of training locations by clicking here.
This postcard was mailed to all commercial manure applicator business owners/managers in early December. Please be sure to share this information with you employees as the card is only mailed to the business owners. If you did not receive a postcard please be sure to update your commercial manure application business contact information with DNR. Be sure to register for this event with the location where you plan to attend. Some county Extension offices in Iowa will host training at different dates so please consult with your local office to inquire if there is alternative training. If you are a commercial manure applicator that primarily deals with dry or solid manure resources, we encourage you to attend one of the seven dry manure workshops scheduled for February 2013. The list of those dates and locations is also available at the link above.

Confinement site manure applicators can access a list of 2013 Confinement Site Manure Applicator workshop dates and location by clicking here. New for this year, we have included a calendar "app" for the list of workshop dates and locations. Find the meeting you plan to attend either by clicking on the colored county on the map or in the table. Then click on the calendar symbol in the column "add to my calendar". Click open to get a pop-up box for your computer calendar, then click save and close. This format should work across several different calendar platforms.  As this is new feature for us, please send me any feedback you may have or any difficulty you encounter. The dry manure certification workshops on this list are the same for the commercial applicators.

A commercial manure applicator training program will be offered by the Iowa Commercial Nutrient Applicator’s Association at the Iowa Pork Congress. Please contact the association for more details.

A confinement site manure applicator certification workshop will also be held at the Iowa Pork Congress on Thursday January 24, from 10:00 a.m to noon. Please consult the Iowa Pork Congress show guide for more details.

If training does not work in your schedule, you may contact a DNR Field Office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam.
