Welcome to the monthly update for the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) Web site. This update is provided as a service to inform you about changes made to the IMMAG Web Page or items of interest dealing with manure management and air quality from animal feeding operations. The Iowa DNR is currently accepting comments on two rule packages related to animal production systems and manure management issues.

The first rule package would bring Iowa's regulations on open feedlots into compliance with federal and state laws. The DNR reports 87 Iowa counties have adopted the Master Matrix for use in evaluation of construction permits in 2009. More information on the Master Matrix can be found at: A map showing the counties implementing master matrix can be found at:

MANURE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION: Confinement site manure applicators are reminded they are required to attend 2 hours of training each year or take and pass the certification exam once every 3 years to maintain their manure applicator certification license. There are 17 confinement site applicator workshops scheduled for the remainder of February. A complete list of workshops and locations may found at: For those applicators renewing their licenses, they must attend training prior to March 1 or they will be charged a late fee in addition to their certification fees.

Commercial applicators who still need to meet applicator certification requirements prior to the March 1 deadline should contact their local county Extension office to schedule an appointment to watch the video or webcast to meet training requirements or they may contact their local DNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam.

Iowa State University Extension staff in NW Iowa are hosting four workshops that will help producers address concerns regarding air emissions reporting requirements. Information regarding these workshops can be found at:

April 1, 2009. IMMAG, Iowa State University Extension and the IA NRCS will host the next RUSLE2 and Iowa Phosphorus Index workshop at the Polk County Extension Office in Altoona, IA. Registration for this workshop is now open and can be accessed at: This workshop is designed to train service providers who are assisting livestock producers in the development of state required manure and nutrient management plans that will be implementing the Phosphorus Index. Producers are also welcome to attend. If you have questions about this workshop, please call Kapil Arora at 515-382-6551 or Angie Rieck-Hinz at 515-294-9590. Registration is $150 if received on or before March 25. After March 25 registration is $165. Attendees must bring a laptop computer.

April 2, 2009. IMMAG, Iowa State University Extension and the IA NRCS will offer an Advanced RUSLE2 workshop at the Polk County Extension Office in Altoona, IA. Registration is open only to attendees who have previously attended a RUSLE2 and Iowa P Index workshop. The goal of this workshop is to help attendees further understand practice based changes in conservation management that will affect the outcomes of both the RUSLE2 software and the Iowa P Index. Registration is $150 if received on or before March 25 and $165 if received after March 25. Registration is available on-line at:

April 6-8, 2009. The Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan Development Course, sponsored by Iowa State University, will be held at the Hotel Ft. Des Moines, Des Moines, Iowa. This three-day short course is designed to train individuals in the development of CNMPs. Course participants will learn how to prepare CNMPs meeting current NRCS guidelines. April 9, 2009. Understanding and Working with Nutrient Management Plans under the CAFO Final Rule Workshop will be held at Hotel Ft. Des Moines, Des Moines, IA. This one day training will provide an opportunity for you to gain the knowledge you need to work with CAFO operators as they make decisions about meeting requirements under the CAFO final rule on their farm. July 22, 2009. The Upper Midwest Manure Handling Expo will be held at the Central Iowa Exp Site between Ames and Boone, IA. Currently the expo is accepting sponsorships and vendor applications. Additional information regarding this event can be found at:
