CURRENT NEWS: The Current News page on the IMMAG site is updated weekly. Please check this site often for the latest news regarding animal feeding operations and manure management issues.  

IMMAG Fact: This edition of the IMMAG Update marks the 70th update distributed over the course of the past 6 years. Currently this email update is sent directly to 1,023 people and is reprinted in numerous newsletters and popular press venues.

The DNR is currently accepting public comments regarding a proposed rule package that will limit and eventually prohibit the application of manure on ground being planted to soybeans. A copy of the rule package can be found at: Four public hearings will be held as follows:

  • Feb. 8, 2007  at 10 a.m., Carroll County Courthouse, Courthouse Meeting Room,  114 E. 6th Street, Carroll
  • Feb. 8, 2007 at 4 p.m., Orange City Public Library, downstairs meeting room, 112 Albany SE, Orange City.

In other news from the DNR, producers who submit their manure management plans late will be now be referred for legal action one month after the plan is due. For more information see the DNR press release:

SERVICE PROVIDERS: Producers who need to file manure management plans are encouraged to seek help. A list of manure plan writers can be found on the Service Providers section of the IMMAG site.  This list currently contains 36 businesses or individuals who offer services to develop manure management plans.

MANURE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION: Confinement site manure applicators should plan to attend a certification workshop to meet their annual training requirements.  A list of confinement site applicator workshops can be found at: For more information regarding certification requirements for confinement site applicators please see Workshops run through February.

PUBLICATIONS: Iowa State University Extension in cooperation with the IA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has recently published a fact sheet titled Data Collection Worksheet for RUSLE2 and Iowa Phosphorus Index. The publication, PM 2021, is only available electronically and can be accessed at: This worksheet can be used by consultants or producers to identify information needed to run the RUSLE2 and Iowa P-Index software for manure and nutrient management plans.

Just in time for the next big snowstorm to hit Iowa is the latest fact sheet in the Iowa Manure Manager Series titled Winter Manure Application. This publication is available on the web only and can be accessed at:
EVENTS: Come visit the IMMAG and Iowa Pork Industry Center booth at the Iowa Pork Congress scheduled for January 24-25, 2007 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Dry Poultry Manure Applicator Workshops.  Iowa State University Extension has scheduled 5 dry poultry manure applicator certification workshops in February. These workshops will meet the certification requirements for both commercial manure applicators and confinement site manure applicators. Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan Development Course
