IMMAG Updates

January 2013

Welcome to the monthly update for the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) Web site. This update is provided as a service to inform you about changes made to the IMMAG Web Page or items of interest dealing with manure management and air quality from animal feeding operations. If you wish to subscribe to this mailing please click here. You may also view this update with direct links on the CURRENT NEWS site on IMMAG.

This IMMAG Update is devoted entirely to the manure applicator certification program.  Please forward this information to other manure applicators.

MANURE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION:

Commercial Manure Applicators
Commercial manure applicator training for business owners/manager and employees is scheduled for Friday, January 4, 2013 from 9 a.m. to noon in 69 Iowa county Extension offices and one location in Wisconsin.  You can access the list of training locations by clicking here.

There is no fee to attend training, but we ask that you please register ASAP to help ensure county Extension offices have adequate training materials on hand. You can register by calling the County Office where you plan to attend.  Please remember you must meet certification requirements immediately if you are handling, hauling or land-applying manure in Iowa if you were not certified in 2012 and you must renew your license by  March 1, 2013, if you were certified in 2012 and want to avoid paying the late fees.

If you are not able to attend the Iowa commercial manure applicator training on January 4, the following options are available to you to meet manure applicator certification requirements.

The Extension office in Renville County, MN will offer the Iowa Commercial Manure Applicator training program on Thursday, January 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. If you plan to attend please call Larissa Maurice at (320)-523-3713 to register.

You may contact your local Iowa County Extension office and make arrangements to attend training when the county offers the reshows each month, or when they allow you time outside of the scheduled reshow at the local office. Please call the county Extension office where you plan to attend training to get local dates, times and reshow policies.

A commercial manure applicator training program will be offered by the Iowa Commercial Nutrient Applicator’s Association at the Iowa Pork Congress. Please contact the association for more details.

You may opt to take the certification exam by contacting your local Iowa DNR field office and scheduling time to take the certification exam.

Confinement Site Manure Applicators
Confinement site manure applicators can access a list of 2013 Confinement Site Manure Applicator workshop dates and location by clicking here. New for this year, we have included a calendar “app” for the list of workshop dates and locations. Find the meeting you plan to attend either by clicking on the colored county on the map or in the table.  Then click on the calendar symbol in the column "add to my calendar". Click open to get a pop-up box for your computer calendar, then click save and close.  This format should work across several different calendar platforms. As this is new feature for us, please send me any feedback you may have or any difficulty you encounter.

If you are not able to attend one of the Confinement Site applicator workshops scheduled for 2013, the following options are available to you:

You may contact your any Iowa County Extension office and make arrangements to attend training when the county offers the reshows each month, or when they allow you time outside of the scheduled reshow at the local office. Please call the county Extension office where you plan to attend training to get local dates, times and reshow policies.

A confinement site manure applicator certification workshop will also be held at the Iowa Pork Congress on Thursday January 24, from 10:00 a.m to noon. Please consult the Iowa Pork Congress show guide for more details or call Tyler Bettin at the Iowa Pork Producers’ Association at (800) 372-7675 to pre-register.

Dry or Solid Manure Applicators
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa DNR offer 7 workshops for dry/solid manure applicators. These workshops meet the certification requirements for both commercial and confinement site manure applicators. You can access details about these seven dry manure certification workshops scheduled for February 2013 by clicking here. If you can’t attend these workshops, you can attend either a commercial manure applicator training event or a confinement site applicator training event, or you may take the certification exam. Commercial manure applicators must attend a training session for commercial applicators. Confinement site applicators may attend either a confinement site event or a commercial applicator event.

If you have any questions about the manure applicator certification training events please contact Angie at 515-294-9590 or Rachel at 515-294-6685. If you have questions about manure applicator certification rules, please contact Jeff Prier with DNR at (319) 653-2135. If you have questions about licensing please contact Colleen Zeliadt with DNR at (515) 281-8648.

The next IMMAG Update will be distributed later in January and we will return to all things manure at that time.

Best Wishes for 2013,

Angie
