July 2008 IMMAG UpdateWelcome to the monthly electronic update for the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) web site. This update is provided as a service to inform you about changes made to the IMMAG Web Page or items of interest dealing with manure management and air quality from animal feeding operations. Please check this site often for the latest news regarding animal feeding operations and manure management issues. The Iowa NRCS recently announced biofilters for odor control are now eligible for funding through the USDA's Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). In the June edition of the IMMAG Update I highlighted some resources that could be used to develop emergency response plans on farms. In addition to those resources, please review the planning guide "Emergency Action Planning" by the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Additional resource material regarding manure application on snow covered or frozen ground has been posted to the IMMAG homepage or you can access links to the research reports below: EVENTS: For a complete list of events, please see the IMMAG events page at: http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/events.html August 20, 2008. A list of County Extension Offices that will offer the statewide Commercial Manure Applicator reshow program can be found at: http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/certification/08macreshow.html. The program will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and will end at noon. This workshop will assist commercial manure applicators who need to meet annual training requirements prior to the fall application season. If you have employees who need to meet certification requirements, please plan to have them attend this program. A letter containing details and locations of this certification workshop was sent to commercial applicator businesses last week. If you have any questions about manure applicator certification requirements, please contact your local County Extension Office. Three workshops on "Buying and Selling Manure" will be held in August. The goal of these workshops is to assist livestock producers who want to sell manure. The workshop will focus on sampling manure, pricing manure, and meeting requirements to sell manure.
