Applications for the 2009 Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Awards are now available.  These awards are the premier environmental honors in Iowa and recognize leadership in protection and enhancement of natural resources. Applications are due by March 31, 2010. For more information please see: http://www.iowadnr.gov/other/ee/files/09application.pdf

Spring is right around the corner, right? Let’s hope so, but in the meantime, we still have plenty of snow cover in most of Iowa. This is the time of year we consider late winter in Iowa.  Temperatures are rising, snow is melting, but we still see chances of snow in the forecast. This is also the time we must highly caution against applying manure. Wet and muddy conditions are probably hampering manure application at this point but please be advised that from an agronomic and environmental standpoint, the risk of losing nutrients in runoff is very high.  Please click on the article "Manure Stewardship: Late Winter Manure Application Risk" and the fact sheet "IMMS Vol. 3 Winter Manure Application" for additional information.

MANURE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION:

All commercial manure applicator and confinement site applicator workshops have been completed this winter. Manure applicators who still need to meet certification requirements should contact their local County Extension Office to schedule an appointment to view the training dvd. You can access contact information for all County Extension offices at this link http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ouroffices.htm by clicking on your county of choice. Applicators can also meet certification requirements by taking the certification exam at one of the six DNR regional field offices. Confinement site applicators are reminded they need to attend two hours of training each year of their license to maintain their certification status. Just a reminder for commercial manure businesses who will be hiring employees for the fall application season, ISU Extension will offer a statewide reshow of the commercial applicator training on August 25, 2010. Additional details including locations will be provided in the July edition of this newsletter.

EVENTS:

March 19. The Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center will host the Webcast "Precision P Feeding the Dairy Cow." The Webcast starts at 1:30 p.m. (Central). For more information please click here.
