Welcome to the monthly update for the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) Web site. This update is provided as a service to inform you about changes made to the IMMAG Web Page or items of interest dealing with manure management and air quality from animal feeding operations. The State of Iowa is now accepting applications for the 9th Annual Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Awards. These awards are the premier environmental honors in Iowa, recognizing leadership and innovation in the protection of Iowa’s water, land and air. The Environmental Excellence Awards program honors outstanding comprehensive environmental sustainability practices, in addition to special projects in:

  • Air Quality
  • Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy
  • Environmental Education (for Educators & Educational Institutions)
  • Habitat Restoration
  • Waste Management
  • Water Quality

Please consider submitting nominations for these awards. More information can be found at: http://www.iowadnr.gov/other/ee/index.html.

MANURE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION:

The live workshops for manure applicator certification have been completed for 2011. If you still need to meet manure applicator certification requirements for 2011, please contact your local county Extension office to determine dates and times the training will be offered. If you choose to attend the training on a day that is not scheduled for training, you can be charged a $10 fee to watch the video. Plan accordingly and contact your Extension office so you know the local policy for showing the videos.

EVENTS:

The IMMAG Events page is a compilation of manure management related events. Please check the events page often for new listings.

On March 25, the Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center will offer the Webcast "The Soil Health Paradigm: A Holistic Approach to Managing Manure in Agroecosystems." The webcast will start at 1:30 p.m. (central). This webcast is available to all.

Iowa State University Extension is sponsoring three workshops for medium-size CAFO dairy and open feedlot operations. The objective of these workshops is to help producers understand current regulatory enforcement by EPA, the design criteria for feedlots, and recordkeeping requirements. The registration fee is $30 for individuals and the first person from each livestock operation and $15 for each additional person from a livestock operation. Please register by March 23 so we can provide adequate food for lunch and adequate handout materials.

The 2011 North American Manure Handling Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, July 20 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Exhibitor registration is currently open and the deadline for early registration is May 1, 2011. Additional information can be found at: http://manureexpo.com/
