Welcome to the monthly electronic update for the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) web site. This update is provided as a service to inform you about changes made to the IMMAG Web Page or items of interest dealing with manure management and air quality from animal feeding operations. CURRENT NEWS: The Current News page on the IMMAG site is updated weekly. Please check this site often for the latest news regarding animal feeding operations and manure management issues.  

A new version of RUSLE2 has been released from NRCS and should be used by all who are required to use the P Index for their manure or nutrient management plans. Information can be found on the Iowa NRCS web page: http://www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/RUSLE2.html

IMMAG Fact: The average length of time a person spends browsing the IMMAG Web page is about 14 minutes per visit. 

PLANS, PERMITS and REGULATIONS:  The Plans, Permits and Regulations page on the IMMAG Web page was updated last week.  Copies of the PowerPoint Presentations and the forms discussed at the April 11 and 12 Open Feedlot Workshops held in Orange City and Carroll have been posted to this page.  Click on the title Open Lots, and then scroll down to the section titled “Resources”.  As a reminder to those looking for record-keeping forms to meet NPDES compliance, Forms 1-11 that are posted from the meetings, are example templates.  They are linked as WORD documents so that you may save the files to your computer and make changes to the files are needed.  I have also linked the DNR forms in this resource list.

Anaerobic Treatment of Agricultural Wastes – May 21-22, 2007, Des Moines, Iowa
A national short-course on the Anaerobic Treatment of Agricultural Wastes is being offered by The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University. The course will be held at the Hotel Fort Des Moines on May 21 & 22, 2007. The course is designed to provide information on the selection, implementation and operation of anaerobic digesters for manure and agricultural wastes for technical service providers, environmental technicians and facility operators interested in using anaerobic treatment at their facilities; and for technical service providers, NRCS personnel, regulatory and environmental agencies, and extension professionals involved with the implementation anaerobic treatment systems. Topics will include a background and introductory information on anaerobic digestion, cost sharing and support opportunities, biogas production rates, collection, handling, and electricity production, marketing carbon credits, anaerobic digestion and biogas use at ethanol plants, centralized digestion, and multiple case studies. Equipment, product, and service providers will be available during daily breaks and receptions. The next RUSLE2 and the Iowa P-Index Workshop is scheduled for June 12, 2007, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This workshop will be held at the Pappajohn Education Center, 1200 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. This workshop will teach the fundamentals of using the RUSLE2 and Iowa P Index software.  This workshop will focus on the use of these software programs for use in developing manure management plans and nutrient management plans. Registration is limited to 30 people and you must bring a laptop computer. Advanced RUSLE2 Workshop. June 13, 2007.This workshop is a continuation of the regular RUSLE2 workshop and builds upon the principles of practice-based changes to reduce erosion in both the RUSLE2 software and implementation of the Iowa P Index.  At this point in time registration is open only to those people who have attended the first RUSLE2 workshop.  For additional information and registration requirements please see: http://www.ucs.iastate.edu/mnet/rusle2summer_adv/home.html.  Registration is limited to 30 people.  If you have questions regarding this workshop, please contact Kapil Arora at 515-382-6551 or Angie Rieck-Hinz at 515-294-9590. 

August 7, 2007.  The NRCS Field Office located in Carroll will be sponsoring a Manure Application Education field day.  More information will be provided in a future IMMAG Update.
