May 2008 IMMAG Update

Welcome to the monthly electronic update for the Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG) web site. This update is provided as a service to inform you about changes made to the IMMAG Web Page or items of interest dealing with manure management and air quality from animal feeding operations. CURRENT NEWS: The Current News page on the IMMAG site is updated weekly. Please check this site often for the latest news regarding animal feeding operations and manure management issues.

On May 13, the Environmental Protection Commission passed a motion giving DNR the go ahead to begin developing rules regarding the "practice of placing, spreading, or storing animal manure on frozen ground, including, where necessary, prohibiting this practice." At this point in time the DNR is gathering information from surrounding states regarding such practices. Stay tuned for information regarding this rulemaking process.

PUBLICATIONS and REPORTS: In late April and early May the following two reports were released: Putting Meat on the Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production In America, A Report of the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production, and CAFOs Uncovered: The Untold Costs of Confined Animal Feeding Operations, from the Union of Concerned Scientists.

June 9-11, 2008. Midwest Composting School. This 3-day school features a program that will train participants in the science and art of composting. The school focuses on a combination of hands-on training, lecture and discussion, facility operator panel discussions, and problem solving. The school will be located at the Field Extension Education Lab (FEEL) near Ames, IA. For more information contact Kapil Arora at (515) 382-6551 or visit http://www.aep.iastate.edu/compost/. Space is still available. To receive the early registration price, you must be registered by May 27.

June 20, 2008. LPE Educational Webcast Series, " Managing Manure on Small Farms." This webcast is open to the public and begins at 1:30 p.m. Central.

July 9, 2008. The Great Lakes Manure Handling Expo will be held at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in London, OH.  For more information please see: http://oema.osu.edu/Expo08_home.htm
