We all know how long winter can be in Iowa. Take a few minutes to read the IMMAG feature story this month titled “Manure Management: Preparing for Winter, Part 1.”

MANURE APPLICATOR CERTIFICATION:

Attention Confinement Site Applicators: In early December the DNR will mail letters to confinement site applicators who missed their annual 2 hour training requirement in either 2010 or 2011 or for both years. If records show you missed training in 2010, please review you own records and contact the DNR (515-281-8648) if your records show differently. If in fact you did miss training in 2010, you will have to take the remedial exam prior to be eligible to renew your manure applicator certification in 2012. If you have not attended training in 2011, you can still schedule time at your local County Extension office to meet training requirements for this year.

Attention Commercial Manure Applicators, I need your help. Your colleagues have suggested we compile a list of the top 10 things you can do to avoid a manure spill and use that information in your commercial manure applicator training in January. Send your top ten or top five, or top idea to me at amrieck@iastate.edu and I will compile a list of the most popular ideas. If you have photos you want to share as well, that would be helpful. Due by December 2. Thanks! So far there has only been one submission.

During this season of giving thanks, I want to thank my colleague, Rachel Klein, and my web designer Liisa Jarvinen for all of the great work they do for IMMAG, Manure Applicator Certification and all of the other manure educational programs we offer. Their dedication, skills and knowledge are what make all of this work on our end. And thanks to our partners, farmers, manure applicators, service providers and Extension staff for your support.
