CURRENT NEWS: The Current News page on the IMMAG site is updated weekly. Please check this site often for the latest news regarding animal feeding operations and manure management issues.

The DNR presented its latest rule package as an informational item at the October 20 Environmental Protection Commission meeting. This rule package will clarify all stockpiling regulations, includes rules for deep bedded confinements, prohibition of liquid manure application on snow-covered of frozen ground as well as many other provisions. A copy of the rule package can be found at: http://www.iowadnr.gov/epc/09oct/16.pdf. It is important you read this rule package and determine how it may affect your livestock operation. If the EPC approves the rule package at their November meeting, the rule package will be put out for public comment. A list of public hearings and instructions on how to submit comments will be included in a future IMMAG Update as the information becomes available.

As if this fall has not been challenging enough, it would seem we have had several swine pit fires/explosions happening around the upper Midwest. There has been much email traffic regarding this issue in the past few days and the research community is scrambling to determine the cause. This is not a new issue, but the frequency at which this is happening this fall has many people worried.  Iowa State University Extension released a press release last week with many general safety reminders about manure gases when agitating and pumping pits. Please take a few moments to review all safety precautions with your employees and commercial manure applicators. A copy of the press release can be found at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/2009/oct/060901.htm.

Finally, as a general reminder, last year (May 2008) a law went into effect that limits the amount of liquid manure from confinements and effluent from open lots being applied to a field going to be planted to soybean to 100 pounds of total nitrogen. This amount includes all sources of N if the field is receiving liquid manure plus a commercial fertilizer source.

EVENTS: January 6, 2010. Iowa Commercial Manure Applicator Certification Training. This training will provide the necessary 3 hours of annual training for commercial applicators to meet certification requirements. More details will be included as we get closer to this date.

January and February 2010. Confinement Site Manure Applicator Certification Workshops. Please see http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/certification/10confdates.html for a complete list of workshop dates, times and locations.
